Forty Miles

Written with Troy Cassar-Daley

Every time I make this trip, forty miles is all it takes
Along the way I see my life, every triumph and mistake
There’s the tree where we carved the heart
And signed our names to show our love
Now the memories come flooding back
With all the things we were dreaming of

Forty miles won’t take a day
But it’s a long, long way
It’s not far, as the crow flies
My whole life in forty miles

I remember one dark day, limping home all stony broke
The golden boy all ragged and torn
The longest miles that I ever drove
Later on when the years had turned
Coming home with a heart full of pride
Telling all the sweet old stories
To the woman soon to be my bride

Forty miles won’t take a day
But it’s a long, long way
It’s not far, as the crow flies
My whole life in forty miles

There’s the road to the old stone church
Where we lay Grandma down to rest
I remember what she said
‘I’m ready, child, so don’t you fret’
Now I just passed the second creek
Another circle has come around
Won’t be long ’til I see the light
With forty miles behind me now

Forty miles won’t take a day
But it’s a long, long way
It’s not far, as the crow flies
My whole life in forty miles
