I picked up the ringing phone. Paul Grabowsky was on the line."Paulus," he said, "it's about time we worked together. How about you give me a dozen or so of your songs to arrange with the Art Orchestra. Group them around a theme, and we'll invite some other singers in to make a show."
"OK," I said. "Sounds good." And pondered for a while. Themes came and went in my mind. Weather? Seasons? Women's names? Drinking? I'd recently written a song called God Told Me To, the last verse a direct lift from Revelations, which put me in mind of other songs I'd written using biblical language. I started a list and roped in a few secular hymns under the Mavis Staples, Prince principle – God and Sex are all mixed up. Stacked together they stood as Songs Of Praise with God Told Me To the needed snake in the pile. I took them over to Paul's place in East St Kilda and left them with him for a couple of months. He's got some strange kind of musical boot camp going on over there. The songs all came back with new muscles and brains, though some of the lyrics were around 3000 years old. We gave most of them to Vika and Linda Bull and the songs developed new tongues as well. I had to learn new ways to sing the rest.
